How And Why You Need To Clean Your Office Bins

Your office bin is constantly in use from your staff and visitors, especially in the lunchtime rush and tea breaks. Although you are encouraging employees to use them, which is great! You will need to remember to clean them to keep them safe and useful. If you rarely or even never clean them you may be going against everything you are trying to achieve with an intense cleaning schedule.

There are 4 main reasons why you NEED to clean your office bin

Reason 1 > Smell

Food decomposes and rots after a certain amount of time. If left, the food left in your bin will start to produce a foul smell that will put off your customers and clients. Not a good impression on the company.

Reason 2 > Maggots & Flies

Flies are severely attracted to rotting waste, if you do not empty your rubbish or do not clean any spillages inside the bin, you are basically inviting them over for a party. Not only will the flies be a nuisance, they will lay eggs which turn into maggots… we are sure the sight of creepy crawlies will excite staff and customers… not.

Reason 3 > Rodents

Same as flies, rodents love some rotting food. If you do not make sure your bins are kept to hygienic clean standards, you are increasing the likelihood of infestation and contamination in the building.

Reason 4 > Cross Contamination

A dirty waste-bin can be a breeding ground for a variety of germs and bacteria. It has been known that some of the worst bugs, including Salmonella, E.Coli and Listeria, have been found in inadequately cleaned bins.

Did you know if left unemptied for a fortnight, the level of harmful bacteria can multiply by 600%!

Now you know why you should clean your bin, here is a quick guide on how:

Step 1: Wipe the lid a couple of times a week, using a preferred disinfecting cleaning product. The lid is often forgotten, but it will get contaminated along with the rest of the bin. Do not leave room for error for the germs to exploit.

Step 2: Once a week, thoroughly clean the inside of the bin with disinfectants. Make sure to wear rubber gloves! This helps to contain the bacteria. If it is particularly grubby, take the bin outside and use a hose, brush or broom to remove the stubborn waste.

Step 3: Let it fully dry before use, this will reduce the likelihood of mould developing.

Step 4: Wipe the entire outside of the bin within the weekly clean to ensure proper decontamination.

Step 5: Regularly change the liner to make sure it remains clean and safe.

Here are some of our favourite tips!

  • Sprinkle a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda into the bottom of the bin before inserting the liner. This keeps foul odours and moisture at bay.

  • To stop your bin from filling up too quickly, sort your rubbish into recycling and composting- this also helps with being eco-friendly.

  • Use a drop of olive oil on a dry cloth to remove fingerprint marks.

  • If you have a matt brushed stainless steel bin, we recommend using a microfiber cloth and glass cleaner to keep it unscratched and shiny.
