How Does An Energy Management System Work?

Energy management systems are quickly rising in popularity due to their ability to save endless amounts of energy and money for businesses. Other techniques can be used, but it is the detailed nature of the data provided that allows even more savings to be made. Return on investment is clear and easy to see, making it the ideal choice for any business looking to cut down on wasted energy use.

Firstly, who would benefit? It is mainly any commercial business who reside in a workplace. Regardless of how small or large, there is always room for energy to be wasted resulting in unnecessary energy costs. Did you know offices (banks, finance, agencies, accountants, media, admin etc.) are second in the most amount of energy used by commercial businesses? With the endless amount of computers, printers, lights, cleaning and utilities it is no wonder they are second highest on the list. With this in mind, it seems that if you are in an office that does not already have an EMS, it is best practice to implement one into your business as soon as possible to truly benefit and protect the environment.

The best energy management systems will integrate seamlessly into your current building systems, without the need for replacement or removal as the system will adapt and connect without trouble. Due to quick implementation, you can start to see useful data very quickly, therefore, can start conducting tests to reduce energy consumption. Also, due to not needing to purchase as many new devices as other options, the process will be cost-effective.

There are mainly two sets of existing components that an EMS could link to:

Existing infrastructure

By ‘existing infrastructure’ we mean the current physical systems and sensors installed into the building. These include heat controls, lighting, lifts, fire-detection and security systems. When the EMS is connected to all of the building’s systems it can measure how much energy they are using and how improvements can be made to positively benefit the business.

Current building software

Some buildings take it one step further and already have existing software such as building management systems (BMS) or building automation systems (BAS) that the EMS can link to further refine the energy saving process. When all infrastructure and software are connected by one central hub, the data will be extremely accurate to use and reap the benefits.

Essentially, once the system is connected to all business systems, it can accurately measure the energy use. With this information, it can produce alerts when ‘abnormal’ energy usage is happening in order for you to appropriately resolve the issue. Additionally, the energy management system is educated on weather information and average energy uses for your building in order to determine what is a ‘normal’ amount of energy to be used. Once a bank of information has been collated the system can predict energy use and determine whenever abnormalities are occurring.
