The re-writing of the Company Business Plan necessitated the re-evaluation of our Mission & VIsion Statements.  A task that was harder than we anticipated.


We all recognised that there was a need for the statements to not only reflect the impetus of the Company, but they also needed to be easy for everyone to remember.


Our first hurdle was confusion over a working definition. Thankfully, we found this concise definition, which we adopted,


‘A Mission Statement defines the company’s business, its objectives and its approach to reach those objectives. A Vision Statement describes the desired future position of the company’. (1)


Through the weekly Head Office staff activities and the staff email, everyone was invited to put forward their suggestions.  These suggestions were collated and then circulated anonymously for consideration by all prior to the Quartlery Staff Training Day.


It was envisaged that this prior preparation would allow for a quick decision on the day.  How silly.  Fancy forgetting the competitive nature of those in Head Office.


Everyone was split into groups to agree on a mission and vision statement before the groups were joined and an agreed mission statement and vision statement was found.


Ironically, whilst both statements hide the debate, the contributions, the passion and good nature behind their creation, their simplicity represents the direct, transparent nature of both the Company and its valued workforce.
