Tea and coffee is an important part of the day for any office. The electric kettle is an inevitable part of any kitchen and the creation of hot beverages. You may even be drinking a hot drink whilst reading this blog right now, ask yourself- does it taste weird? This may be because limescale has built up inside your kettle. Although limescale will not damage the kettle, it will work better if the limescale is regularly removed and cleaned. With the tea and coffee breaks at work being one of the most enjoyed parts of the day, it is crucial that the office kettle is in full working order. No kettle could result in a decrease in office morale and mood, which then affects productivity. It is not environmentally cautious or cost-effective if the kettle has to be replaced every few months, therefore thorough and regular cleans are important to include in your cleaning schedule. You will need to descale the kettle. Descaling is essential to a well-working kettle and good tasting boiled water. To descale you will need some sort of acid, whether that be a commercial cleaner or natural cleaner. Once you have decided which cleaning agent you will use, it is time to add water to make the final substance to remove the limescale. Pour the substance into the kettle until it covers all the places which need descaling. From here you can either leave the substance to soak, empty and rinse, or boil the kettle with the mixture inside, remembering to leave the kettle to completely cool before pouring it away and rinsing. After this, you will wash the inside of the kettle with washing up liquid and fresh water, after that it should be limescale free! If there is still limescale left, repeat the treatment. You will now be able to enjoy your tea or coffee without a horrible taste or bits! Whilst cleaning the inside of a kettle is very important, the outside will also need to be cleaned. Remember to unplug the kettle! Wash the kettle by hand with washing up liquid and freshwater, scrub with a sponge until the entire kettle is dirt free. If you feel a sponge may damage the kettle, alternatively used a soft cloth to wash it. Once it has been washed, leave it to completely dry before you plug it in and next use. For some, keeping their desk clean and tidy sounds like an impossible mission. Some may thrive by working in organised chaos, but for most, it is the opposite. It is common that it is easier to get tasks complete and on time when working at an uncluttered workstation. In order to clear your desk quickly, you need to do the following: Step 1, Books - Keep your books off the desk and on the bookshelf. An appropriate shelving unit will help to keep them organised and easy to find. If you are using the desk then obviously they must be on the desk, but once finished remember to put them back in the correct place. Step 2, Clutter - Throw away any irrelevant clutter such as paper, waste and other things you do not need in order to keep the workspace clear. Do not hoard things you do not need, simply throw them away! A cluttered desk often makes for a cluttered mind, it has been seen that a tidy workspace increases work productivity and mood- something we all want whilst at work. Step 3, Drawers - Use your drawers! This may be a simple and obvious part of desk management, but often people forget to store their items in their drawers. It is good practice to dedicate a draw to the different types of items you want to store. E.g. your top draw could include all your notebooks and diaries, the middle draw could be important documents which you regularly refer to, the third could be where your equipment is stored. Step 4, 4:55 pm - Use the last few minutes of your day to clear your desk of any build up which the work day has incurred. This allows a fresh start for the following morning, maintaining a clear mind and productive levels. A clear desk will mean it will be easier for your desk to be cleaned, making it a safer working environment for you. Your desk is one of the main areas of the office which is contaminated with germs, by clearing your desk it allows cleaners to thoroughly decontaminate your workplace. As much as employers have a right to provide a safe environment, you must also work alongside them to maintain health and safety measures in the workplace. As businesses become more and more consciously aware of how eco-friendly their business is, it is important to know how beneficial plants are to your workforce. There are many benefits to having plants, they do not only provide aesthetic value. A variety of studies have shown that any positive changes can be seen by adding a few plants to the office decor. In this blog post, we tell you 4 reasons why you should introduce nature into your organisation. Increase in employee productivity - Due to modern life dictating that we spend more and more time indoors, it is important to incorporate the outdoors in. There is a variety of evidence proving that nature can boost productivity in an office. By being around and in sight of plants, memory retention and attention span will significantly increase. Productivity for a business is highly important, therefore if there is a clear correlation between nature and work rate, businesses should be utilising this option. Increased health - Improvements in health leads to less sick days. Sick days have the power to alter a business’ production rates, then harming sales and revenue. Healthy employees will be hard working employees, providing more substance for a business. Good health improves workplace morale and general happiness, making it a happier and inviting place to work. Also, it is seen that neurological, psychological, fatigue, and skin symptoms all saw a decrease when vegetation was included in office space. Better working environment - Plants can also influence a visitor or client’s interaction with a business. Often our visual environment influences our mood, therefore an office with bright green flourishing plants and flowers can project a trusting, warm yet professional vibe to a business. Furthermore, the humidity of an office can affect our fatigue levels, respiratory comfort level and overall mood. The average humidity comfort level is between 30-60%, but most workplaces struggle to reach these levels. When plants are added to a room they increase humidity without becoming excessive if an appropriate amount of nature is used. Plants are then able to bring the space to a comfortable level for employees and visitors. Reduce stress - There is a clear correlation between plants and a decrease in stress level. This is likely to be because the feeling of being comfortable whilst working in a cared for area, leading to better output for the company.
