Safety should be at the forefront of your business’ mind. Within ‘safety’ there are electrical hazards which you should be aware of. Although not the most common of workplace accidents, it is highly important you should know areas of electrical risk as 1 in 13 electric caused injuries result in death. Other hazards include shock and burns, electrical fires or electrical explosions. The severity of the injury will depend on the level of voltage, amount of body resistance to the flow, the path the electrical current takes through the body and the amount of time the current flows through the body. The hazards are often linked to where and how the electrical item is used. Carry on reading to know 5 ‘shocking’ electrical hazards which you should be aware of in your workplace. 1. Faulty wiring - Check all wires, plugs, extension leads, junction boxes, receptacles etc are in full working order and are not frayed, damaged or exposed. To make sure all are safe, it is good practice to hire an external agency to check your workplace’s electrics. 2. Poor training - All employees should be given information on all electrical related hazards in the workplace, including prevention methods and what to do in case of an emergency. Inadequate information and control mean the use of electrical items becomes unsafe. 3. Incorrectly replaced fuses - If fuses do not correctly fit into the fuse holder they could cause an equipment malfunction. Also, if the fuse holder is corroded it will cause the fuse not to fit and can create resistance or overheating. 4. Water and electricity - An example of a pair which should never go together. It is the impurities such as minerals and dust found in water which reacts with electricity causing further reactions. Avoid electricity being near any water at all costs. 5. Overloaded or damaged plugs, sockets or cables - Overloaded or damaged plugs could exceed the maximum current rating for that extension lead. This could cause the plug to overheat and possibly cause a fire or electric shock. WINNS Services specialises in protecting health and safety rights and keeping the workforce safe. The word ‘Asbestos’ refers to six naturally occurring fibres which are able to resist heat, fire, chemical reactions and electricity. Although asbestos fibres are microscopic, they pack a punch in their levels of durability and resistance. The substance was used for many years in the commercial and industrial industry, as well as consumer products. In recent times its use has been banned, but it can still be found in some older homes, schools and buildings. The use of asbestos products has been banned due to asbestos being found to cause mesothelioma, deadly cancer which affects the heart, lungs or and/or stomach. Asbestos is a category 1 human carcinogen and controlled by the Control of Asbestos Regulations act (CAR) introduced in 2012. There is a control limit to the number of asbestos fibres (0.1 fibres) per cubic centimetre (0.1 f/cm3) of air. There is no ‘safe’ level of exposure to asbestos fibres, therefore any work involving the fibres must be as far below the control limit as possible. If a business has a presence of asbestos in their building, it is their responsibility to repair and maintain the property in order to access and manage the risk attached to asbestos. If there any plans to undertake work with asbestos the appropriate enforcing authority must be notified at least 14 days prior to the work beginning. All employees must be given regular and thorough training and instruction if working with the fibres, the level of information must be given in an appropriate manner and explain the amount of exposure highlighted in the risk assessment. No matter of your industry, all businesses must be fire conscious in their workplace. A fire has the ability to kill employees and ruin properties, therefore it must be a top priority to try and prevent. In this blog, we discuss 5 of our top tips for preventing fires in the workplace. Waste - Try to keep work areas clear of any paper, waste or any other items which could catch on fire. Keep bins away from plug sockets, this further decreases the risk of the rubbish catching alight. Wiring - If any electrical wiring is damaged, replace or fix it immediately. Wires which could be walked on decreases the quality of the outside coating, exposing the inside wires which carry the electric. Try to keep all wires safely stored away. Plugs/circuits - Do not overload extension leads, plugs or circuits as they could overheat and catch fire. Appliances - Turn off any electrical appliances at night/when everyone leaves the office. Machines that are constantly running have more chance of overheating due to having to constantly be on and working. Equipment - If the equipment produces heat (e.g. microwave, printer, computer, toaster etc) try to keep it away from anything flammable. Also, do not put the equipment directly against a wall! Being directly against a wall means the piece of equipment room cannot ‘breathe’ and therefore cool down, meaning the process of overheating can happen quicker than normal. Nearly all businesses aim to be mindful of the environment and how their company is impacting it. Best practices such as recycling are often enforced into the workplace in order to be more environmentally friendly. However, further practices allow for a business to be truly ‘green’. The Carbon Trust Standard (CTS) is the leading independent certification that can verify a company’s impact on the environment by monitoring its energy consumption and CO2e emissions, water use and waste output. In order to be accredited, a business must meet or exceed guidelines set by the CTS. Only those who reach this goal will be featured in the Green Business Directory, a listing of all organisations which are also accredited. By being recognised for your environmental efforts, the Carbon Trust Standard accreditation can provide a trusted quality to a business. Another benefit of a business being accredited is that they receive a quarterly accredited supplier newsletter which includes relevant industry developments and how to maintain being an eco-friendly organisation. WINNS Services is Carbon Trust Standard accredited, and we pride ourselves on exceeding client expectations. On the 19th of May 2018, Meghan Markle married Prince Harry. Everyone’s attention was on the typical wedding must knows such as the dress, flowers, cake, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, would Meghan’s dad make an appearance? However, one thing that was evident was that the security was prominent throughout the entire wedding. The Royal family wanted to ensure the safety of everyone involved, including the public who attended Windsor Castle to watch the wedding unfold. It is said £30m was spent on security for the big day, armed officers were seen walking the streets holding an array of firearms. The officers were told to ‘do whatever is necessary’, including shoot to kill, in order for no danger to come to anyone at Windsor Castle. As well as armed police there were undercover officers and security barriers installed to ensure safety of the guests. The security measures were executed by Thames Valley Police, with the wedding’s security being their biggest operation… ever. The cost of security was higher than at Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding day, with an estimated cost of £20m. The price was said to be so high due to the current terror threat which the UK is facing. It is said officers were prepared for anything, having every possible disruption planned for- from a small protesters group to a life-threatening terrorist attack. WINNS Services has been established for over two decades providing security services to clients. We pride ourselves on exceeding expectations and working with clients to offer the best solution to their queries.
