As businesses become more and more consciously aware of how eco-friendly their business is, it is important to know how beneficial plants are to your workforce. There are many benefits to having plants, they do not only provide aesthetic value. A variety of studies have shown that any positive changes can be seen by adding a few plants to the office decor. In this blog post, we tell you 4 reasons why you should introduce nature into your organisation. Increase in employee productivity - Due to modern life dictating that we spend more and more time indoors, it is important to incorporate the outdoors in. There is a variety of evidence proving that nature can boost productivity in an office. By being around and in sight of plants, memory retention and attention span will significantly increase. Productivity for a business is highly important, therefore if there is a clear correlation between nature and work rate, businesses should be utilising this option. Increased health - Improvements in health leads to less sick days. Sick days have the power to alter a business’ production rates, then harming sales and revenue. Healthy employees will be hard working employees, providing more substance for a business. Good health improves workplace morale and general happiness, making it a happier and inviting place to work. Also, it is seen that neurological, psychological, fatigue, and skin symptoms all saw a decrease when vegetation was included in office space. Better working environment - Plants can also influence a visitor or client’s interaction with a business. Often our visual environment influences our mood, therefore an office with bright green flourishing plants and flowers can project a trusting, warm yet professional vibe to a business. Furthermore, the humidity of an office can affect our fatigue levels, respiratory comfort level and overall mood. The average humidity comfort level is between 30-60%, but most workplaces struggle to reach these levels. When plants are added to a room they increase humidity without becoming excessive if an appropriate amount of nature is used. Plants are then able to bring the space to a comfortable level for employees and visitors. Reduce stress - There is a clear correlation between plants and a decrease in stress level. This is likely to be because the feeling of being comfortable whilst working in a cared for area, leading to better output for the company. Stress can be triggered from a variety of situations in relation to work, but plants seem to help solve nearly all of those problems through visual, mental or physical stimulus. Did you know a type of fire detection has been around since 1658? However, this was far from the systems that we have today. They were simply men who would walk the streets on the lookout for fires. They carried buckets, ladders and a bell to warn if a fire had occurred. Although there are now a variety of systems to choose from, all ultimately do the same thing- warn people if there is a fire.

There are many cleaning terms which are important to know when deciding what's best to clean your office, workplace, school, restaurant, businesses etc. In this blog post we break down the differences between the 3 popular methods of cleaning: Clean, Sanitise and Disinfect. The basic rule for each of these methods are as follows: Clean - Low-risk surfaces, such as floors and windows, which are less likely to spread pathogens from contact with the surface. Simply removes the visible dirt, dust or impurities. Sanitise - Often for food contact surfaces, e.g. kitchen sides or the desk if your employees eat at their desk, to stop food from being contaminated. Sanitisers often do not make antiviral claims as they are to reduce, not kill. Disinfect - For frequently touched surfaces which are a breeding ground for germs, bacteria and viruses. The disinfectant aims to kill the microscopic organisms which could affect your health. You may be thinking, ‘I will simply disinfect everything, I do not need to clean or sanitise’- WRONG. Cleaning and sanitising are the beginning steps to the decontamination process. Cleaning away the visible dirt will make it easier and more effective to remove germs. You will clean, then implement the more intense methods to create optimum results. Some items may only need surface-cleaning, but it is important to know that they will occasionally need to be disinfected in order to limit the number of germs in the area. This is where knowing which items/places need daily or periodic cleaning is crucial for the safety of your business or school. Sanitising is the step above cleaning, it aims to reduce the number of bacteria on a surface. This is the basic standard expected for surfaces which are in contact with food. Sanitisers are a chemical which can kill 99.9% of specific bacteria within 30 seconds. Therefore they are useful and necessary, but not efficient enough to destroy all disease. Disinfectants are the only way to fully destroy pathogens and harmful microorganisms. There are 3 levels of disinfectants: Low-level - Kills almost all vegetative bacteria, viruses and fungi. However, it does not kill bacteria spores. High-level - Same effect as low-level, but has the potential to kill bacteria spores if used in high concentration and suitable conditions. Hospital-grade - Are able to eliminate most infections and disease-causing bacteria, viruses and fungi. This includes destroying bacteria spores. Safety should be at the forefront of your business’ mind. Within ‘safety’ there are electrical hazards which you should be aware of. Although not the most common of workplace accidents, it is highly important you should know areas of electrical risk as 1 in 13 electric caused injuries result in death. Other hazards include shock and burns, electrical fires or electrical explosions. The severity of the injury will depend on the level of voltage, amount of body resistance to the flow, the path the electrical current takes through the body and the amount of time the current flows through the body. The hazards are often linked to where and how the electrical item is used. Carry on reading to know 5 ‘shocking’ electrical hazards which you should be aware of in your workplace. 1. Faulty wiring - Check all wires, plugs, extension leads, junction boxes, receptacles etc are in full working order and are not frayed, damaged or exposed. To make sure all are safe, it is good practice to hire an external agency to check your workplace’s electrics. 2. Poor training - All employees should be given information on all electrical related hazards in the workplace, including prevention methods and what to do in case of an emergency. Inadequate information and control mean the use of electrical items becomes unsafe. 3. Incorrectly replaced fuses - If fuses do not correctly fit into the fuse holder they could cause an equipment malfunction. Also, if the fuse holder is corroded it will cause the fuse not to fit and can create resistance or overheating. 4. Water and electricity - An example of a pair which should never go together. It is the impurities such as minerals and dust found in water which reacts with electricity causing further reactions. Avoid electricity being near any water at all costs. 5. Overloaded or damaged plugs, sockets or cables - Overloaded or damaged plugs could exceed the maximum current rating for that extension lead. This could cause the plug to overheat and possibly cause a fire or electric shock. WINNS Services specialises in protecting health and safety rights and keeping the workforce safe. The word ‘Asbestos’ refers to six naturally occurring fibres which are able to resist heat, fire, chemical reactions and electricity. Although asbestos fibres are microscopic, they pack a punch in their levels of durability and resistance. The substance was used for many years in the commercial and industrial industry, as well as consumer products. In recent times its use has been banned, but it can still be found in some older homes, schools and buildings. The use of asbestos products has been banned due to asbestos being found to cause mesothelioma, deadly cancer which affects the heart, lungs or and/or stomach. Asbestos is a category 1 human carcinogen and controlled by the Control of Asbestos Regulations act (CAR) introduced in 2012. There is a control limit to the number of asbestos fibres (0.1 fibres) per cubic centimetre (0.1 f/cm3) of air. There is no ‘safe’ level of exposure to asbestos fibres, therefore any work involving the fibres must be as far below the control limit as possible. If a business has a presence of asbestos in their building, it is their responsibility to repair and maintain the property in order to access and manage the risk attached to asbestos. If there any plans to undertake work with asbestos the appropriate enforcing authority must be notified at least 14 days prior to the work beginning. All employees must be given regular and thorough training and instruction if working with the fibres, the level of information must be given in an appropriate manner and explain the amount of exposure highlighted in the risk assessment.
