The Evolution Of Fire Detection Systems

Did you know a type of fire detection has been around since 1658? However, this was far from the systems that we have today. They were simply men who would walk the streets on the lookout for fires. They carried buckets, ladders and a bell to warn if a fire had occurred. Although there are now a variety of systems to choose from, all ultimately do the same thing- warn people if there is a fire.

1902

The first heat detecting system was made.

1939

Swiss physicist Dr Ernst Meli created a device which could detect harmful gases in underground mines, this was called an ionisation chamber. He went on to invent a cold-cathod tube, this had the ability to amplify a small electronic signal which triggers an alarm if gas is present. This became the first ionisation smoke alarm. However, these were very expensive.

1960s

It was studies conducted in the 1960s that showed that smoke detectors responded to smoke faster than heat detectors. This revolutionised the direction of smoke detectors, shifting focus to methods of smoke detection.

1970

An ionisation device powered by a battery was invented and went into production the year after. This allowed homeowners to have the benefits of an ionisation detector.

1975

As fire alarms became more developed and in demand, mass production began of the “SmokeGard 700” – a unit made of fire-resistant steel.

1995

The 10-year-lithium-battery-powered smoke alarm was introduced which we have maintained, this is due to its effectiveness in detecting smoke and quickly issuing warning, as well as being reliable.

There are 3 types of smoke alarms available:

  1. Ionisation
  2. Photoelectric
  3. Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide detection

Some systems combine all 3 types of alarm and are very sensitive to detecting fire/smoke.
