You have taken the step of choosing a CCTV system for your property, but do you know which will work best for you? We have written this blog to explain which types are available and which are best suited for your building. The importance of surveillance is second to none, but installing a system which is not effective for your needs will be a waste of time, energy and money.

Essentially, there are 5 types of camera available:

- Day/Night camera
- PTZ camera
- Dome camera
- C-mount camera
- Bullet camera

Day/Night camera

This type allows the system to record footage both during the day and at night. Some cameras struggle to produce a clear picture at night due to the darkness, therefore this system is great for those who are at particular risk at night. For example, do not have anyone on site at night, have large valuable quantities, contain specialist equipment etc. They do not contain infrared illuminations like other cameras, so can produce clear images which are highly valuable if any suspicious behaviour or incident was to occur. These cameras can be used internally or externally and are particularly effective if the building has multiple access points which need 24/7 surveillance.

Other benefits include:

  • - They can record in colour, as well as black & white
  • - A wide variety of sizes to choose from

PTZ camera

PTZ stands for Pan, Tilt and Zoom. This means the camera can be remotely moved to your desire. Perhaps you may need a particular focus on one area, this camera allows you to move and zoom into the area of interest. This type of camera will be most beneficial to properties which have, or plan to have live security monitoring. CCTV can be used as a deterrent, as well as prevention. These systems allow security officers to spot a problem, look closely at the situation then take the appropriate action, whether that be they go to investigate or call the emergency services.

Other benefits include:

  • - Tracking capabilities
  • - Powerful zoom and autofocus

Dome camera

Perhaps the most common for indoor surveillance, the dome camera allows 360 views of the area around it. A particularly useful tool for deterring criminals as they cannot avoid view, creating a feeling of uncertainty which will most likely cause them to flee the scene. They also have an infrared capability which means they can be used for nighttime surveillance. These are often found in hospitals, care homes, receptions etc.

Other benefits include:

  • - Easy installation
  • - Damage-proof features

C-mount camera

This type allows for change of lense, therefore different levels of distance can be effectively recorded. The normal CCTV system can cover between 35-40ft, whereas a C-mount camera can easily pass 40ft. This is highly beneficial for properties which need long sight recording in order to secure the building. They can be used both internally and externally.

Other benefits include:

  • - Easily supports changes in technology
  • - Large size makes them easily noticeable, deterring criminals

Bullet camera

This type of system is mostly used outdoors but can be used internally if desired. Similar to the C-mount camera, the bullet can cover long distance recording whilst having a protective casing. This casing protects the equipment against natural elements such as dust and dirt, allowing lifespan to be as long as possible, becoming a cost-effective piece of equipment. If your CCTV requirements are mainly outdoors this may be the best option in terms of ability, lifespan and cost.

Other benefits include:

  • - Compact size
  • - High-quality image/video
