Did you know on average more than 25,000 fires are started by plug-in heaters every year? This is a scary thought for any business owner. Fires in buildings not only destroy the workplace and its contents, they can also injure or kill employees. As an employer, it is your responsibility to provide a safe, comfortable and health-conscious workplace, therefore, debating the use of plug-in heaters is important. Read our post to find out why financial institutions should invest in central heating rather than plug-in heaters.

Although most of the accidents caused by space heaters can be avoided by paying attention and promoting safe use, the potential hazards of electric heaters significantly outweigh their advantages. Are advantages such as cheaper bills, self-timer and self-cut off worth the higher risk of fire? We have previously spoken about fire and its dangers in the workplace, plug-in heaters definitely meet the criteria of an unsafe, fire hazardous appliance. As much as fire detection is necessary, the prevention is even more important! Therefore, by investing in central heating you are reducing the likelihood heating equipment causing a fire.

Central heating is the most common way of heating a building, it can be done either with a gas, electric or a renewable heating system. The heat is generated in one ‘central’ place (hence the name ‘central heating’ in the building, then equally distributed out. This could be distributed by having radiators, underfloor heating, or perhaps a ducted air system. A centralised heating system can save you a LOT of money, but this will depend on factors such as what kind of heating you currently have, what type you want to switch to, and the size of the property. It is not one-size-fits-all, therefore research is recommended!

One of the problems with a plug-in radiator is that it will only heat a small area. Whereas central heating will create a balanced warmth throughout the entire building, rather than one part of a room. This creates a more comfortable environment for employees! There are laws in place that dictate the workplace temperature should be reasonable in accordance with the role. For example, it is recommended an office should be around 16°C. It will be much easier to build, control and regulate this temperature using a central heating system as they are a lot more specific in controls than a plug-in.

Think of a plug-in as an add-on, rather than a sole producer of heat. They are a good tool for limited, specific circumstances if used carefully! The fire risks are usually when they’re used too much or improperly, as long as you keep this in mind you are one step closer to a safe and comfortable workplace.
