Swedish Standards Could be a Game Changer to the UK

Sweden is one of the most eco-friendliest countries in the world. If the UK wants to really make the country green then these are the footsteps we should be following in. Hence why there is a lot we can learn from Swedish Standards.

This is a country that won’t even allow cruise liners to visit as they cause too much polution. So how has Sweden achieved this? Below are just a few of the ways that Sweden really has knocked it out of the park with going green.

One of the biggest companies known in many countries is Ikea. This is a Swedish-founded Dutch-based multinational group. We all know this company for its ready-to-assemble, flat pack furniture. Ikea has become the world’s largest furniture retailer since 2008, but did you know how green their stores are? They are always looking for more sustainable sources and are looking to achieve 100% renewable energy.

One of Sweden's biggest steps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions was to shift from oil to district heating in the early 1990’s. This district heating now supplies more than 80 per cent of heat and hot water to Sweden’s apartment blocks. This was first started in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city.

You may remember a global news story explaining that without pollinating insects, such as the bee, the human race would begin to diminish. Whilst this sounds like an elaborate plot for a film, it's actually true. Sweden has been working on encouraging private beekeeping and adding pollination habitats in urban settings.

They are also working on sustainability through urban farming, which has been a popular pastime among Swedes. Many people who are interested in this farming help by using allotment areas and cultivating shared residential pieces of land into fruit and vegetable gardens.

Sweden’s Växjö City has become the first city in the world to set the goal of becoming fossil-fuel free by 2030. Vaxjo has been working on this since 1996 when they announced this, earning them "Europe’s Greenest City" title. Hopefully they achieve this goal, showing the rest of the world it can be done and leading them in to greener ways of living.
