What You Should Know About Asbestos

The word ‘Asbestos’ refers to six naturally occurring fibres which are able to resist heat, fire, chemical reactions and electricity. Although asbestos fibres are microscopic, they pack a punch in their levels of durability and resistance. The substance was used for many years in the commercial and industrial industry, as well as consumer products. In recent times its use has been banned, but it can still be found in some older homes, schools and buildings.

The use of asbestos products has been banned due to asbestos being found to cause mesothelioma, deadly cancer which affects the heart, lungs or and/or stomach. Asbestos is a category 1 human carcinogen and controlled by the Control of Asbestos Regulations act (CAR) introduced in 2012. There is a control limit to the number of asbestos fibres (0.1 fibres) per cubic centimetre (0.1 f/cm3) of air. There is no ‘safe’ level of exposure to asbestos fibres, therefore any work involving the fibres must be as far below the control limit as possible.

If a business has a presence of asbestos in their building, it is their responsibility to repair and maintain the property in order to access and manage the risk attached to asbestos. If there any plans to undertake work with asbestos the appropriate enforcing authority must be notified at least 14 days prior to the work beginning. All employees must be given regular and thorough training and instruction if working with the fibres, the level of information must be given in an appropriate manner and explain the amount of exposure highlighted in the risk assessment.
