11 Quick Tips For Minimising Electrical Hazards In The Workplace

Electrical safety is very important in a workplace. Electrical items are all around us, meaning there is constant exposure to hazards which could harm or even kill in extreme cases. It is important to have appropriate prevention measures in place to avert unnecessary dangers. It is an employer's duty to provide a safe environment for staff and customers, therefore being aware of electrical hazards is essential. Here are 11 quick tips to minimise electrical hazards:


Water and electrics do not mix, therefore never use or touch any electricals when your hands are wet.

Do not overload extension leads as this could cause the lead to blow.

Do not plug extension leads into other extension leads.

Try not to use extension leads unless required as they are not 100% safe.

Only buy and use equipment which has been tested for safe use by the manufacturer.

Do not cover extension leads with any materials as this could not only can cause an electrical failure but can also be a trip hazard.

Do not have any wires or leads running through walkways as this could be a trip hazard for employees, visitors or customers.

Always unplug electronics before servicing or repairing.

There are warning signs available to ensure safety, therefore do not ignore them. If the equipment is acting strangely, remove it from use until it can be tested and fixed.

Check all cords and wires regularly to make sure they are safe to use, encourage employees to report any problems with their electrical equipment.

Always educate your employees about the danger of using electrical items as well as providing a guard to any exposed electrical components or wires.
