NATIONAL ICE-CREAM MONTH

Having looked through all the National Days celebrated in July, WINNS decided that this month they would celebrate National Ice-cream Month which was very fortuitous and with all the glorious weather we have been having.

In order to celebrate across the whole Company, WINNS Account Managers, whilst carrying out thier monthly quality audits and welfare checks, have been treating staff on site to their favourite ice-creams and eliciting their favourite flavours, makes and toppings.

THE ORIGIN OF THE ICE-CREAM - OR ONE VERSION AT LEAST!

Ice cream's origins are known to reach back as far as the second century B.C.  We know that Alexander the Great enjoyed snow and ice flavoured with honey and nectar.  Biblical references also show that King Solomon was fond of iced drinks during harvesting.  During the Roman Empire, Nero Claudius Caesar (A.D. 45-86) frequently sent runners into the mountains for snow, which was then flavoured with fruits and juices.

Over a thousand years later, Marco Polo returned to Italy from the far East with a recipe that closely resembled what is now called sherbet.  Historians estimate that this recipe evolved into ice cream sometime in the 16th century.  England seems to have discovered ice cream at the same time, or perhaps even earlier than the Italians.  "Cream Ice, as it was called, appeared regularly at the table of Charles I during the 17th century.  France was introduced to similar frozen desserts in 1553 by the Italian Catherine de Medici when she became the wife of Henry II of France.  it wasn't until 1660 that ice cream was made available to the general public.  The Sicilian Procopio introduced a recipe blending milk, cream, butter and eggs at Café Procope, the first café in Paris.

For those who share our search for knowledge and understanding, we have provided some links that will add to the 'I never knew that' element of your day.

WHO INVENTED THE ICE-CREAM CONE

ROSSI'S ICE-CREAM - SOUTHEND ON SEA SEAFRONT

Southend on Sea, Essex, the location of WINNS Head Offices, is very fortunate to have Rossi's Ice-cream Parlour 1 mile walk away. Rossi's has been making premium ice-cream with a long-standing heritage since 1932.  The premises feature original 1930s decor and were Grade II listed in 1997 as part of the Royal Arcade.  Rossi's is busy all day and all week long, but it is well worth the wait.  No day trip to Southend or a walk along the front is complete without a stop at Rossi's.

KEY INGREDIENTS

The key ingredients of ice-cream are milk, cream and sugar.  If you have an ice-cream maker, then you can add any ingredient you like, although beware as alcohol does not freeze so making your own rum and raisin may not turn out how you expect.
