Your financial building is particularly prone to spreading colds and flu. Regardless of whether you’re a London office or an office in the South-East, any office anywhere is at risk. With nearly all employees and visitors using public transport as well as being a shared space, it means the probability of catching a sniffle, sneeze and cough is highly likely. In some cases, a cold can be minor, but for others, it could lead to a life-threatening situation. Because of this threat, it is essential you have developed a thorough cleaning schedule which will keep your staff and visitors safe.

For some, keeping their desk clean and tidy sounds like an impossible mission. Some may thrive by working in organised chaos, but for most, it is the opposite. It is common that it is easier to get tasks complete and on time when working at an uncluttered workstation. In order to clear your desk quickly, you need to do the following: Step 1, Books - Keep your books off the desk and on the bookshelf. An appropriate shelving unit will help to keep them organised and easy to find. If you are using the desk then obviously they must be on the desk, but once finished remember to put them back in the correct place. Step 2, Clutter - Throw away any irrelevant clutter such as paper, waste and other things you do not need in order to keep the workspace clear. Do not hoard things you do not need, simply throw them away! A cluttered desk often makes for a cluttered mind, it has been seen that a tidy workspace increases work productivity and mood- something we all want whilst at work. Step 3, Drawers - Use your drawers! This may be a simple and obvious part of desk management, but often people forget to store their items in their drawers. It is good practice to dedicate a draw to the different types of items you want to store. E.g. your top draw could include all your notebooks and diaries, the middle draw could be important documents which you regularly refer to, the third could be where your equipment is stored. Step 4, 4:55 pm - Use the last few minutes of your day to clear your desk of any build up which the work day has incurred. This allows a fresh start for the following morning, maintaining a clear mind and productive levels. A clear desk will mean it will be easier for your desk to be cleaned, making it a safer working environment for you. Your desk is one of the main areas of the office which is contaminated with germs, by clearing your desk it allows cleaners to thoroughly decontaminate your workplace. As much as employers have a right to provide a safe environment, you must also work alongside them to maintain health and safety measures in the workplace. There are many cleaning terms which are important to know when deciding what's best to clean your office, workplace, school, restaurant, businesses etc. In this blog post we break down the differences between the 3 popular methods of cleaning: Clean, Sanitise and Disinfect. The basic rule for each of these methods are as follows: Clean - Low-risk surfaces, such as floors and windows, which are less likely to spread pathogens from contact with the surface. Simply removes the visible dirt, dust or impurities. Sanitise - Often for food contact surfaces, e.g. kitchen sides or the desk if your employees eat at their desk, to stop food from being contaminated. Sanitisers often do not make antiviral claims as they are to reduce, not kill. Disinfect - For frequently touched surfaces which are a breeding ground for germs, bacteria and viruses. The disinfectant aims to kill the microscopic organisms which could affect your health. You may be thinking, ‘I will simply disinfect everything, I do not need to clean or sanitise’- WRONG. Cleaning and sanitising are the beginning steps to the decontamination process. Cleaning away the visible dirt will make it easier and more effective to remove germs. You will clean, then implement the more intense methods to create optimum results. Some items may only need surface-cleaning, but it is important to know that they will occasionally need to be disinfected in order to limit the number of germs in the area. This is where knowing which items/places need daily or periodic cleaning is crucial for the safety of your business or school. Sanitising is the step above cleaning, it aims to reduce the number of bacteria on a surface. This is the basic standard expected for surfaces which are in contact with food. Sanitisers are a chemical which can kill 99.9% of specific bacteria within 30 seconds. Therefore they are useful and necessary, but not efficient enough to destroy all disease. Disinfectants are the only way to fully destroy pathogens and harmful microorganisms. There are 3 levels of disinfectants: Low-level - Kills almost all vegetative bacteria, viruses and fungi. However, it does not kill bacteria spores. High-level - Same effect as low-level, but has the potential to kill bacteria spores if used in high concentration and suitable conditions. Hospital-grade - Are able to eliminate most infections and disease-causing bacteria, viruses and fungi. This includes destroying bacteria spores.
